Sclerotherapy Information

Sclerotherapy:

Vein disorders are a serious reality for many people. Everyone wants to look and feel their best, but vein disorders cause a lot of unnecessary aggravation and embarrassment. Sclerotherapy is one solution to an ever-growing problem.

If you suffer from certain vein disorders, but are hesitant about long, painful procedures, sclerotherapy may be just what you're looking for. The origins of some vein disorders are still unknown, but it is thought that many are caused by heredity, excessive standing, weight gain, hormonal changes and even pregnancy.

The most common vein disorders today are spider veins and varicose veins. Those who find themselves suffering from spider veins will find small clusters of red, blue and purple veins on their legs. They can be very unsightly and leave people feeling self conscious about their appearance. Sclerotherapy is a procedure designed to permanently remove spider veins. This procedure leaves legs looking young and healthy.

The Procedure:

Before the procedure is performed, the treatment area will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution. The physician will stretch the skin in the area being treated in order to keep it taut, so that he or she may inject the sclerosing agent into the spider veins. Magnification and bright, indirect light will also be used to ensure precision.

The spider vein removal procedure will involve many injections, usually one for each inch of spider vein. Anywhere from 5 to 40 injections will be given during each procedure and patients will usually require multiple procedures in order to completely rid their legs of spider veins.

Will It Hurt?

Each Sclerotherapy procedure takes about 15 to 45 minutes depending on the condition of the veins. No anesthetic is required, but patients may feel some mild discomfort associated with the insertion of the needles. Patients will feel small pin pricks and a mild burning sensation during injection, but this discomfort will fade almost instantly.

Risks:

Like any procedure there are certain risks associated with Sclerotherapy but they are very rare. These risks include:

  • formation of blood clots
  • severe inflammation
  • allergic reaction to sclerosing agent

All of these risks can be treated upon development. It is important that you discuss all risks with your physician before undergoing this vein removal treatment.

Results:

Sclerotherapy does result in the permanent removal of spider veins, but it does not stop new veins from forming. Continuous vein removal treatments have allowed many patients to live very normal lives with younger, healthier, clearer looking legs.

Costs:

The average cost for a single Sclerotherapy treatment is usually around $300 but this can vary depending on the area in which you live, the doctor that treats you, the clinic you go to and the extent of your vascular deformity. Most patients will need two or more treatments in order to completely rid their legs of spider veins. For many patients this is an inexpensive procedure that is well worth the time and energy put into it.
